Substantial Internet Disruption Hits Dozens Sites and Apps

A large-scale internet outage has affected many websites and applications worldwide, as users noting issues connecting to the web following issues at Amazon’s online infrastructure platform.

The disrupted apps include Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and Duolingo, as well as a host of Amazon-managed platforms like its primary shopping platform and the Ring doorbell company.

Across the United Kingdom, Lloyds bank was disrupted in addition to its affiliates Halifax and the Scottish bank, and also reports of difficulties reaching the HM Revenue and Customs website on Monday morning. Also in the UK, several Ring users took to online platforms to report their security devices were malfunctioning.

Just within Britain, reports of disruptions on individual apps totaled the thousands for each platform.

The company stated that the outage began in the Atlantic coast of the US at the cloud division, a division that offers essential internet backbone for many companies, who utilize space on AWS infrastructure. Amazon Web Services is the biggest global web hosting service.

Just after midnight (PDT) in the US (8am BST), Amazon confirmed “increased failure rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a region on the east coast of the US. The widespread consequence appeared to hit platforms around the world, and the problem monitoring service showing problems with the same sites in multiple continents.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that tracks online failures, additionally noted a surge in issues on Monday morning, and numerous instances found in the Virginia area, the site of the AWS US-East-1 zone where the company stated the issues originated.
