Students Express Concerns That Artificial Intelligence Is Undermining Their Study Capabilities, Research Finds

As per new study, pupils are sharing concerns that using machine intelligence is weakening their ability to learn. Many report it makes schoolwork “too easy”, while others claim it hinders their original thinking and impedes them from acquiring new skills.

Extensive Utilization of AI Among Learners

A study examining the utilization of AI in UK schools discovered that just 2% of students between the ages of 13 and 18 stated they did not use artificial intelligence for their schoolwork, while four-fifths said they consistently used it.

Adverse Impact on Skills

Regardless of artificial intelligence's popularity, 62% of the students reported it has had a adverse impact on their abilities and development at school. One in four of the participants agreed that AI “facilitates accessing solutions without independent work”.

An additional 12% indicated AI “restricts my imaginative processes”, while similar numbers said they were less inclined to address issues or produce innovative text.

Nuanced Awareness By Young People

An expert in generative AI remarked that the investigation was a pioneering effort to examine how youth in the UK were integrating AI into their education.

“The thing I find fascinating is how sophisticated the answers are,” the professional said. “The fact that 60% of learners express worry that AI promotes imitation over original effort demonstrates a profound grasp of academic objectives and the technology’s advantages and drawbacks.”

The professional continued: “Young people who are using this technology actually have a pretty sophisticated, quite mature understanding of what the technology does in relation to their schoolwork, which is fascinating because we don’t give young people enough credit when it comes to using technology in an educational space, unaided, in this way.”

Empirical Investigations and Broader Issues

The findings correspond to scientific studies on the usage of artificial intelligence in academics. A particular analysis evaluated brain electrical activity while essay writing among participants using AI models and found: “These findings provoke anxiety about the future scholastic effects of AI dependence and stress the importance of more extensive investigation into its learning functions.”

Almost 50% of the two thousand students surveyed reported they were anxious their classmates were “surreptitiously utilizing AI” for schoolwork without their educators being able to detect it.

Request for Support and Positive Components

Numerous respondents reported that they wanted more assistance from teachers for the proper use of artificial intelligence and in assessing whether its responses was trustworthy. A program aimed at assisting teachers with AI guidance is being initiated.

Just 31% said they didn’t think AI use had a negative effect on any of their competencies. But, the majority of students said using artificial intelligence helped them gain additional competencies, for instance 18% who said it assisted them understand issues, and 15% who stated it helped them produce “new and better” ideas.

Pupil Perspectives

Upon further inquiry, one 15-year-old female student said: “I’ve gained a better grasp of math concepts, and the technology aids in resolving challenging queries.”

At the same time, a boy of age 14 claimed: “I process information more rapidly than in the past.”
